Root Cause's Business Innovator Award is given to members of the business community who have built a business with a social mission that creates positive impact in the communities in which it operates. Past honorees, who have included Gary Hirshberg, co-founder and chairman of Stonyfield Farm and Scott Griffith, chairman and CEO of Zipcar, have led their respective companies to significant success and have demonstrated a commitment to supporting innovation across sectors. The purpose of the award is to draw parallels between groundbreaking business practices and social innovation.

“Blu Homes brings game-changing technology to home building, and was founded with the mission of creating innovative, beautifully designed green homes that are accessible to all types of Americans,” said Bill Haney, Blu Homes founder and president. “We are honored to receive this award from Root Cause, which recognizes our commitment to progressive business practices.”

Maura and Bill will accept the award at Root Cause’s tenth annual Social Innovator Showcase on Thursday, May 9th at the Microsoft New England Research & Development Center. The showcase will highlight five 2013 Social Innovators and one of Root Cause’s 2013 Impact Entrepreneurs for potential investors, as well as spark conversations on the best approaches for developing and spreading innovation. More than 300 business, government and philanthropic leaders from greater Boston will attend the event.

Blu was launched in 2008 by Bill Haney, an experienced technology and environmental entrepreneur, and Maura McCarthy, a venture capitalist with a background in prefab housing. Bill currently serves as Blu president while Maura serves as vice president of strategic development. Bill and Maura are also co-founders of the nonprofit World Connect, which works to improve the health and wellbeing of women and children in underserved and under-resourced communities worldwide.
